How I Use AI in My Photography Workflow: Enhancing, Not Replacing Creativity

AI Retouching VS. Manually Retouched Images

It seems like everyone is talking about artificial intelligence (AI) these days, especially in the photography world. From ultra-fast editing tools to software that can make photos look “perfect” in seconds, it’s natural to wonder how AI fits into a photographer’s workflow. As a client, you should feel empowered to ask your photographer about how they use AI—because it’s not just about the tools; it’s about the intention behind them.

I can only speak for myself, Amy May Laskye, CPP, owner and photographer at Amy May Photography. I bring depth, knowledge, and creativity to every image I capture. I don’t rely on AI to “make” the photo—I rely on my experience, skill, and artistry to anticipate how lighting, posing, and post-production will come together in a cohesive way. The finished image is something I envision before I even press the shutter button.

AI as a Tool, Not a Crutch

Yes, I use AI in my workflow—almost every modern photographer does. But here’s the key: AI is just one piece of the puzzle, not the entire picture. AI software can quickly address certain technical aspects of an image, like:

  • Skin softening to reduce blemishes while keeping a natural look.

  • Glare removal from glasses to make the subject’s eyes shine through.

  • Background cleanup to eliminate distractions that pull focus from the subject.

These tools save time and streamline the process, but they don’t define the final product. Where AI falls short is in the artistic vision—the emotional, personal, and unique aspects of an image that require a human touch.

The Human Touch in Every Image

When I use AI tools, they’re only the starting point. Once the software has handled the technical details, I take over with manual retouching, color balancing, and other custom adjustments. Every image is tailored to highlight your unique beauty and bring my artistic vision.

This is where experience comes in. Over the years, I’ve mastered a range of tools and techniques that help me create images that feel authentic and timeless. AI simply enhances my ability to focus on what matters most—crafting portraits that tell your story and boost your confidence.

Why AI Fits Into My Workflow

AI isn’t new to photography; in fact, many of the editing tools photographers have relied on for years already incorporate AI. The difference now is that the technology is more advanced, giving us even more opportunities to work efficiently and creatively.

For me, AI is a time-saver that allows me to focus on the details that make your images unique. It’s not about making every photo “perfect” in a generic way—it’s about ensuring every photo feels perfect for you.

My Commitment to Authenticity

At Amy May Photography, every image I deliver has my personal touch. From the way I frame and light the shot to the final edit, my goal is to create photos that feel genuine, empowering, and timeless. While AI is an amazing tool, it’s the years I’ve spent honing my craft that truly make the difference.

If you’re curious about the role AI plays in photography or have questions about my workflow, I’d love to chat. Transparency is key, and I want you to feel confident that your photos are in expert hands.
