As photographers, we often add more to an image—beautiful fabrics, styled sets, thoughtful details—layering elements until the story feels complete. I love that process. It allows us to build a world inside the frame, to guide the viewer through a narrative shaped by texture, color, and design.
One day, the narrative changed. Instead of adding another layer, I began removing them. The fabrics disappeared. The set faded into darkness. The distractions quietly fell away until only the most essential element remained: light.
In that simplicity, the human form revealed itself differently. A shoulder became a line of light. The curve of a hip became a horizon of shadow. Strength and vulnerability existed together without ornament or explanation. Nothing needed to be hidden.
What Can One Light Reveal About the Human Form?
The studio fell silent as a single beam of light sculpted the human form, and in that moment everything unnecessary vanished. No distractions. One light created shape, and the quiet strength of a body simply existing.
That moment stayed with me.
This form of lighting intrigued me. What else could I create that showcases the human form? It became a challenge to see the human body differently. I shifted my focus and removed everything that wasn’t essential.
Just light… and human form.
This body of work become less about photography and more about presence. The body stopped feeling like a subject and started feeling like a landscape-something powerful, timeless, and deeply personal.
What Happens When We Allow Ourselves to Be Seen?
I began asking my clients to step into the light and allow me to photograph them in this new way. Without exception, everyone was willing to be vulnerable. They trusted me to create something different, something that they could display without fear.
Each subject allowed themselves to be seen in a way that was honest and unguarded. Posed not for perfection or approval. Their images represent a quiet power, confidence, and beauty.
For me, The Edge of Light became a meditation of the human body, in its natural form, worthing of reverence. The body carries the story of life in it’s natural form. The images share the birthmarks, body art, stretch marks, and imperfections of life; unapologetically, authentic.
The Edge of Light Exhibition
The Edge of Light will be on display at Voices Studios in Dubuque. I hope you’ll join me for the opening reception on Friday night, April 3, 5:30-9pm. Seeing the images printed and presented in the gallery space is completely a different experience that seeing them on a screen.
This series invites you into that same quiet exploration. Stand with the images. Let your eyes follow the light as it traces the contours of the body. Notice how shadow shapes what is revealed and imagine what is left, just beyond view.
Here, the human form becomes something timeless—sculpted by light, shaped by shadow, and carrying the quiet story of a life lived.
Experience the authenticity of these images.
