What is the Difference Between Hiring a Professional Portrait Photographer vs. Someone with a Camera?

The images we create become some of our most treasured possessions—they hold our memories, our people, and the moments we never want to forget. Choosing a photographer isn’t only about taking pictures—it’s about preserving your story with care, intention, and lasting valueYour photographer should be understand how to use the equipment and offer a consistent artistic style.

What is a Professional Photographer?

Owning a camera or phone, no matter the brand or how expensive, does not make someone a professional photographer.  The camera is just a tool to create a desired outcome. A professional photographer knows how to use these tools to create intentional, compelling, and authentic images.

I earned my CPP designation, Certified Professional Photographer, through PPA (Professional Photographers of America) in 2019. I’ve spent over twelve years refining my style, mentoring with other professionals, attend educational conferences , and create personal stylized artistic images.

Photography is more than just a vocation for me; it is how I translate your special moment(s) into a memory.

What does it mean to be a professional photographer?

This is where clarity really matters – because the difference isn’t just skill, it’s intentional control across every stage of the process. Below is a list of several areas that distinguish a professional from someone who gets paid for taking photos.

  • Technical mastery of light
  • Consistent exposure and camera control
  • Composition and visual design
  • Posing and dirction
  • Client experience
  • Artistic vision and style consistency
  • Post processing and retouching
  • Equipment knowledge and reliability
  • Professional standards.

A person with a camera reacts.
A professional creates – with intention, consistency, and responsibilty.

A professional portrait photographer offers a client experience that guides you from an initial consultation, session prep, shows up on time prepared to photograph, utilizes experience and artistic form to create your images, and guides you through the image selection process.

As a full service studio, I offer a range of printed products such as:

  • Photographic paper prints
  • Metal prints
  • Canvas wraps
  • Acrylic prints
  • Gift prints – for sharing
  • Albums and photo books – for safe keeping
  • Digital images for sharing online
  • Cards and other specialty gift items

Each image is professionally retouched using calibrated equipment. This ensures the quality of the final images.

What Training, Education, and Certifications Matter in Photography?

I invest in my growth by attending annual conferences, engaging in ongoing monthly education through PPA (Professional Photographers of America), and continually exploring personal projects that challenge and refine my craft. These personal projects include ideation, set and costume design, storytelling, lighting, and presentation. It is with this knowledge and expertise that I can tell you that I’m the photographer you should work with.

In 2019, I received my CPP (Certified Professional Photographer) designation through PPA.  It represents hours of education, mastery of light, and one of the most comprehensive tests of my life.  To maintain this designation, continuing education is critical.

I believe a strong foundation, paired with a willingness to learn and evolve, is what shapes a truly well-rounded artist—one who grows with intention through consistent practice.

Why Does Style and Artistic Vision Matter When Choosing a Photographer?

When I think about my style, I always come back to intention. I’m drawn to natural, genuine moments and the way light can bring out connection, personality, and emotion. Whether I’m photographing a family, a high school senior, a maternity session, proposal, or an individual portrait, my focus is always the same—creating images that feel real, relaxed, and beautifully refined. I’ll guide you every step of the way so you never have to wonder what to do, while still giving you space to be yourself. The goal is for your images to feel like you—just seen in the best possible light.

Consistency matters because I know you’re trusting me with moments that can’t be recreated. When you look through my portfolio, I want you to feel confident that what you see is exactly what you’ll receive. Those images represent how I approach every session—not just a handful of perfect moments. From how I use light, to how I guide you, to the final images you receive, everything is intentional and repeatable so your experience feels seamless and your images feel timeless.

What Kind of Experience Should You Expect From a Professional Session?

Let’s begin with a conversation—simple, relaxed, and centered on you. It’s a chance for us to get to know each other and for me to answer any questions you may have. You’re trusting me with moments that matter, and that’s something I take seriously. I want to understand who you are, what this experience means to you, and why these images are important. From there, we’ll plan your session together so everything feels thoughtful and effortless. I’ll guide you through a styling consultation where we can talk through wardrobe, location, timing, and how you want to be seen.

When I arrive at your session, I come prepared to create with intention. I’ll guide you through natural posing, offer artistic direction, and help you feel comfortable and confident every step of the way. If your session takes place in my Galena studio, your comfort and privacy are always a priority—climate-controlled for ease, black-out shades for discretion, and music to create a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere where you can simply be yourself.

How Should Safety, Privacy, and Trust Factor Into Your Decision of Which Photographer to Hire?

I take your privacy seriously because I understand how personal your images will be. Every session is protected by a contract that clearly outlines how your images are handled, shared, and stored—nothing is ever used without your explicit permission. I also carry commercial insurance and operate with professional standards, which means you’re protected, your investment is respected, and there’s accountability at every level.

In my studio, I’ve created a space that feels both secure and welcoming—private, controlled, and designed so you can relax and trust the process. When these safeguards aren’t in place, there’s real risk—images being shared without consent, lack of professionalism, or no recourse if something goes wrong. My role is to eliminate that uncertainty so you can feel completely confident and cared for from start to finish.

What Role Does Professional Equipment and Backup Systems Play?

I use professional-grade equipment, but the brand itself isn’t what matters—it’s how those tools are used to create something meaningful for you. My cameras and lighting are always current and maintained so I can work efficiently and intentionally. I also come prepared with backups of everything—cameras, lenses, batteries, memory cards, and lighting—so if anything unexpected happens, your session continues without interruption.

Your images are treated with the same level of care. Files are backed up immediately on-site and securely stored off-site for added protection. I also maintain copies of your purchased images, so if something is ever lost on your end, your photographs can be recovered. These are more than just files—they’re your memories, and I make sure they’re protected long after your session is complete.

What’s the Difference Between Basic Edits and Professional Retouching?

It’s easy to assume editing is just adding a filter—but true professional retouching is far more intentional. Every image is carefully refined, not altered, with attention to light, color, and detail. I adjust exposure and contrast with precision, ensure color accuracy, and bring balance to the image so it reflects how it felt in the moment—not just how it looked straight out of the camera.

When it comes to skin tones and detail, my approach is always natural and respectful. I refine without removing what makes you. Texture is preserved, tones are balanced, and distractions are softened in a way that feels polished but never overdone. The goal is for you to look like yourself—just at your best, with care taken in every detail.

An image feels “finished” when everything works together seamlessly—light, tone, color, and clarity all aligned. It’s subtle, but it’s the difference between something that looks good on a screen and something that holds up beautifully in print. This matters especially for albums and wall art, where quality, consistency, and longevity are essential. Professional editing ensures your images aren’t just created for today—they’re crafted to last for years to come.

Why Does Professional Photography Cost More (And What Are You Really Paying For)?

My session fee reflects far more than the time spent photographing you. As a full-time professional photographer and studio owner, I’ve invested in professional-grade equipment, ongoing education, insurance, and the systems required to run a reliable, client-focused business. It includes the experience to guide you confidently, the ability to adapt to any situation, and the preparation that ensures your session runs seamlessly from beginning to end. It also reflects the time spent before and after your session—planning, styling guidance, editing, and delivering a final product that meets a consistent, high standard.

The difference between cost and value comes down to what you walk away with. Cost is simply the number on the invoice. Value is the experience you have, the way you feel during your session, and the images you hold onto for years to come. My clients don’t just receive photographs—they leave with confidence, with memories preserved intentionally, and with artwork designed to last. When you invest in professional photography, you’re investing in something that can’t be recreated, repeated, or replaced.

What Makes My Approach Different From Other Photographers in Galena?

I believe photography has the power to shift how you see yourself. Many of my clients come in feeling unsure or even a little nervous, and they leave seeing a version of themselves they didn’t expect—confident, connected, and truly seen. That transformation is something I hold with care. It’s not about changing who you are, but about revealing it in a way that feels honest and elevated.

What I hear most often from clients is how easy and natural the experience felt. They appreciate the guidance, the attention to detail, and the way the session never feels rushed or overwhelming. They walk away not only with images they love, but with an experience they didn’t realize they needed.

Being a photographer in Galena, IL shapes everything I do. The community, its character, and its landscapes are part of the story I help tell. Whether we’re photographing in the studio or outdoors, I draw from the beauty and authenticity of this area to create images that feel both timeless and rooted in place. It’s more than a location—it’s part of the experience I’m proud to offer.

What Are You Really Investing In When You Hire a Professional Photographer?

When you hire a professional portrait photographer, you’re investing in more than a session—you’re investing in how your story is remembered. These images become part of your legacy, something you return to years from now and something that lives beyond you. They hold the faces, the connections, the small details that change over time but deserve to be preserved exactly as they were.

Photographs gain value as time passes. What may feel like an ordinary moment today becomes something irreplaceable tomorrow. The way your family looked, the anticipation of a growing life, the season you’re currently in—these aren’t moments you can recreate once they’re gone. If they’re missed or captured without intention, that opportunity is lost.

That’s why it matters to have someone who understands not just how to take an image, but how to preserve a moment with care and purpose.

The return on this investment is emotional. It’s the feeling you experience when you see yourself and your loved ones reflected back with honesty and beauty. It’s the connection, the pride, the memories that resurface every time you hold those images in your hands. Long after the session is over, these photographs continue to give back.

What Does a Professional Portrait Session Cost?

Our session fees start at $290 and includes an initial consultation, wardrobe recommendations, scheduling recommendations, 1-2 hours of professional portrait photography and a private image reveal appointment (in studio or online).

What is the Cost of Printed Products at the Image Reveal Appointment?

Most clients spend $1500-$3500, but is dependent on what size and number of image(s) and what format you want for your home. We offer collections during your image reveal appointment that offer discounted pricing from our a la carte menu.

What Would It Feel Like to See Yourself the Way You’ve Always Hoped To?

Take a moment and imagine it—the version of you that feels confident, connected, and fully present. Not forced, not overdone…just real, refined, and beautifully captured. What kind of experience are you ready for? What story do you want preserved in a way that feels intentional and true to you?

This isn’t just about booking a session. It’s about creating something meaningful—an experience designed around you, your story, and the moments you don’t want to lose.

If this resonates with you, I invite you to start with a conversation. We’ll talk through your vision, answer your questions, and begin shaping something that feels right from the very beginning.

When you’re ready, I’d love to connect.
